I've heard all sorts of ideas on how to avoid blisters. Having walked on the Camino four times I've found that this is what works for me: 1. Bamboo fibre socks. They're softer than Merino wool and have natural antibacterial properties. 2. Two pairs of socks. I put one pair of ankle socks on and then another pair of short sneaker liners over them. I then turn down the top of the first pair of socks over my footwear. 3. Well used footwear. I usually walk in sneakers though I have walked in waterproof boots when it was particularly rainy. The essential thing is that you walk in footwear that is well worn in. I once made the mistake of buying walking shoes especially for the trip just a couple of weeks before. Don't do it!

I found rubbing vaseline on my feet and wearing two pairs of socks helped. It's so important to wear footwear that you have broken in before the trip. I bought a new pair of walking boots with me but ended up carrying them along the camino as they were so uncomfortable. Also, wearing runners (sneakers) can damage or cause you to lose your toenail so proper walking shoes/boots are best I think. Very informative website, by the way!
